Osteoporosis & Metabolic Bone Disorders
Strong bones are fundamental to maintaining mobility, independence and quality of life throughout life. Bone is a living tissue that is continually renewed, and its strength reflects much more than bone density alone. Genetics, hormones, nutrition, physical activity, medications, medical conditions and different stages of life can all influence skeletal health and fracture risk.
Osteoporosis occurs when the strength and quality of bone are reduced, making fractures more likely. It is often described as a silent condition because bone loss usually occurs without symptoms until a fracture happens. Fractures of the spine, hip, wrist and other bones can have a significant impact on mobility, confidence and independence, making prevention and early recognition an important part of maintaining long term health.
While osteoporosis becomes more common with age and after menopause, bone fragility can occur at any stage of life. Our team has expertise in assessing osteoporosis and skeletal fragility associated with a wide range of medical conditions, including coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, inflammatory arthritis, chronic kidney disease and anorexia nervosa, as well as osteoporosis related to medications and other complex health conditions. We also assess rare and inherited disorders of bone and mineral metabolism, and rare cases of osteoporosis occurring during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, where specialist evaluation and careful management are particularly important.
At Evolve, we look beyond a bone density result to understand what is driving bone strength or fragility. Assessment may bring together fracture history, bone density and imaging, bone turnover and mineral metabolism, hormonal health, nutrition, medications, family history, exercise and other medical conditions to build a detailed picture of skeletal health.
For selected patients, our specialists also have access to advanced high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography, known as HRpQCT, a sophisticated imaging technology that provides detailed information about bone microarchitecture, including aspects of cortical and trabecular bone that cannot be assessed with a standard bone density scan. This can provide a deeper understanding of bone strength and fragility in complex cases and is not routinely available in clinical practice.
Dr Aleksova has a particular interest in sports related bone health, including recurrent stress fractures and bone stress injuries in athletes and active individuals. She also works closely with orthopaedic surgeons in patients undergoing complex orthopaedic procedures, helping to optimise bone health before and after surgery where skeletal strength may influence healing and surgical outcomes.
Treatment is tailored to the individual and their level of fracture risk. Our specialists are actively engaged with leading national and international bone research and professional societies, keeping them closely connected to emerging research, evolving clinical guidelines and advances in osteoporosis treatment. This allows us to ensure that treatment recommendations reflect the most current evidence and contemporary approaches to bone health.
Our focus is not only on treating osteoporosis today, but on developing a longer term strategy for skeletal health. We work closely with GPs, other specialists and allied health professionals where appropriate, with ongoing monitoring allowing care to evolve as your bone health, medical circumstances and needs change over time.
